Christians started using the anchor as a symbol, taking Hebrews 6:19: "We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure." The Ichthys was a symbol Christians used to recognize one another during times of persecution, they would either write the symbol outside of buildings to show it was a church or people would draw half of it, and another person would draw the other half sorta like a silent way to say they were Christian. It dated all the way back to the 2nd century and became popularized in the third and fourth century.
